What is PBS?
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a sytems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all students, especially students with challenging social behaviors, by establishing (a) clearly defined outcomes that relate to academic and social behavior, (b) systems that support staff efforts, (c) practices that support student success, and (d) data utilization that guide decision making.

  • PBS is a proactive systems approach to school-wide disciplne
  • It is based on three levels of prevention; primary, secodary, and tertiary.
  • It is not a curriculum, but a process for decision making
  • It has an instructional focus where the emphasis is placed on:
    • Teaching behavioral expectations directly
    • Teaching social behaviors like academic skills
    • Maximizing academic engagement and success
    • Considering the influence of instructional support
  • It uses data to guide intervention and management decisions
